Icon Art “We Made this Game” Project History

September 22, 2017

The “Legends of Basketball – We Made This Game” artwork project came about when NBA Legend Rick Barry approached Cash McMahon, who had an exhibit of his NBA licensed artwork in the American Airlines Arena during the 2006 Heat vs. Mavericks NBA Finals.

As a member of the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) Board of Directors, Rick invited Cash to make a presentation to the board, with the idea of creating official artwork for the NBRPA. The NBRPA board approved the concept and Cash invited Sam Battistone to Co-produce the project, which was a natural partnership, since Sam had produced the “NBA 50 Greatest Players” lithograph in 1997 with the NBA, to celebrate the their 50th anniversary.

The Producers then signed an agreement with the NBRPA to produce the “Legends of Basketball – We Made This Game” artwork project. The Producers acquired an NBA license for this project that would also include at least ten current NBA players in the collage. The Producers then established this co-branded NBRPA/NBA logo design, as well as inviting and scheduling the signings with sixty retired and current NBA players over a four year process.

The Producers officially launched a finished artwork at the 50th Anniversary of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement in 2010 featuring Michael Jordan. An original artwork was presented to John Dolera, President and CEO, which was a custom Legends of Basketball – We Made This Game HOF piece. Scheduling is now in process for the presentation of the personal pieces to each of the NBA Legends featured on the collage.

Project Mission: NBA Legends Players Presentation Tour

The mission of the NBA Legends player presentations will be to recognize the NBA players that participated in the Legends of Basketball – We Made This Game Artwork Project, which has benefited the National Basketball Retired Players Association. These events will also pay tribute to the legacy of these players and how they helped make the game of basketball into a global entertainment sport.

The key elements of the tour will be producing events that will allow the proper presentation to the NBA players with their one of a kind “Players” piece that will feature the 10 other NBA players that each player has selected to surround their center image on their personal NBA Legends collage. We will be conducting personal interviews on video of the player at the events that will include how they felt about their individual role in making the game and what their take is on the other players that they have selected to honor.

Icon Art Images will collaborate with each NBA Legend to further their brand image, create artworks and memorabilia specifically about them and provide sponsorship opportunities to go along with special events and appearances.

These special events will be sponsored and, in many cases, could include NBA teams participating on several levels. National, regional and local media will be invited to cover the events.

Player Event Objectives:

1. Players will be invited and then scheduled to make an appearance on specific dates.

2. Sponsors will be invited to host the event, secure media advertising, distribute invitations and unveil Player artworks that could include the purchase of pieces.

3. VIP receptions for NBA art collector’s, where they will be invited to an all inclusive event, which will include the purchase of at least one of the Legends of Basketball – We Made This Game pieces. Those attending will have a meet and greet reception with a photo opportunity with player(s).

4. A fan event would either take place at an NBA team arena and/or at a public venue or at the business location of the hosting sponsor.

5. A video production will document all aspects of the Player’s event experience, to utilize in Player promotions with sponsors and collectors for DVD keepsakes, plus media and network broadcast opportunities.

6. A Social Media element will be featured to allow fans the opportunity to experience these historical moments with the NBA Legends.
