The National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA), the official Alumni Association of NBA, ABA, WNBA, and Harlem Globetrotters, wishes to congratulate NBRPA member Patrick Ewing on being named head coach of Georgetown University.
“Patrick has worked extremely hard for over 15 years to rise in the coaching ranks,” said NBRPA President & CEO Arnie D. Fielkow. “We are very proud of him and know that he will do a tremendous job at Georgetown.”
Ewing is an alumnus of Georgetown University, playing for the school from 1981-1985. During his college career, he was named a first-team All-American three times and won Big East Player of the Year twice. He led the Hoyas to three straight NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship games and was successful in bringing home the title in 1984 with a win over the University of Houston.
During his NBA career, he was selected to the NBA-All Star team eleven times and was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history. His number 33 jersey is retired by the New York Knicks. Upon retirement, he became an assistant coach in 2002 with the Washington Wizards and has since also coached for the Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic, and Charlotte Hornets.
In a statement released by Georgetown University, Ewing said: "My four years at Georgetown were the best of my life. Georgetown is my home and it is a great honor for me to return to my alma mater and serve as the next head coach. I have been preparing to be a head coach for many years and can't wait to return to the Hilltop.”
