In his book, The Slight Edge, author Jeff Olsen writes, “The most valuable gift of all is the gift that you always have. You always have a choice.”

We live in a different age—a new generation if you will—and the rules have changed. As former professional athletes, you understand better than anyone that nothing lasts forever, namely careers. Even if you have transitioned into a second or third venture since your final game, the only thing you can be sure of is that change may be right around the corner.

Preparation is the key to successfully handling change. Change is the only road to opportunity.

The National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) offers its membership a personal development program to help players successfully transition and be ready to avail themselves to the opportunities that former basketball players deserve.

Some of the services that members can take advantage of include:
Continuing Education: Are you interested in completing your undergraduate degree, taking courses to help develop your skills or pursuing graduate studies? The NBRPA Player Development Program can identify educational opportunities and help search for financial resources for you to continue your education.

Resume Development: Having an updated resume is the key to being ready for unexpected change. Work with NBRPA Career Development Counselors to make sure that your resume accurately reflects your level of experience and professionalism.

Career Assessment tests are offered not only for players who have recently left the game but for veterans, long out of the game, who may not feel they are completely happy in their current career.

Career Development: Whether you are looking for a new challenge or want to make more noise in the career that you have chosen, our career counselors are ready to assist you reach your goals. We are the only organization to have worked with literally thousands of professional athletes on these issues and we are here to help you as well no matter if you are pursuing your first post-basketball career or if are a seasoned veteran.

The NBRPA Career Development Program offers something for every member to take advantage. It is often taking the first step that is the most difficult. Some research suggests that only 1 in 20 people really reach their goals so most likely the road you are seeking to follow is a lonely one. Let us help you navigate that road.
