FIESTA! 2014 Legends Conference … a party with purpose

August 25, 2014

With a backdrop of white sand and crystal-clear blue water, the NBRPA's Legends World Sports Conference was a party with purpose at the picturesque Fiesta Americana Condesa Resort in Cancun, Mexico August 22-24. Nearly 100 former NBA, ABA, Harlem Globetrotters and WNBA players attended the event, alongside more than 100 guests, supporters, partners and presenters. The 2014 Legends World Sports Conference was presented by Wells Fargo Advisors.

"We had a wonderful weekend of learning, networking, sharing, giving back and celebrating at a beautiful, all-inclusive beach-side resort," said NBRPA President & CEO Arnie D. Fielkow. "Thanks to all you who joined us for a truly successful event that was attended by more than 200 members, guests and partners."

Widely recognized as the premiere gathering of its kind for former professional basketball players, the Legends World Sports Conference (LWSC) is the NBRPA’s annual retreat for members and partners to learn, network and unite in community service. Highlights of the weekend included a charitable youth basketball clinic held in conjunction with the Mexican Basketball Federation and local professional club Pioneros de Quintana Roo, special time with both key NBA and National Basketball Players Association leaders, workshop sessions from experts in a multitude of subjects from all over the country, the unveiling of a new NBRPA recruitment video and redesigned web site and, above all else, fellowship between NBRPA Members, guests and partners.

In addition, the NBRPA presented two special awards to members for their work in the community and on behalf of the organization. Presented by founder Archie Clark, Emmette Bryant was awarded the NBRPA Service Award and Major Jones was presented the Community Service Award. In addition, NBRPA Member Mike Glenn was honored for his work in the community with those suffering from hearing loss by NBRPA Partner EarQ and its Hearstrong Foundaton.

To open the spectacular weekend, the NBRPA brought together 80 children, ages 12-16, on August 22 at 3 p.m. for an afternoon of basketball at Pioneros Stadium. Presented by CoachUp, a service that connects athletes with private coaches, the clinic was part of a unique partnership with Cancun’s local professional basketball club in the Mexican League – Pioneros de Quintana Roo – and both young players and coaches from the club participated alongside more than 20 NBRPA Members. The event was preceded by a press conference to open the NBRPA’s 2014 Legends World Sports Conference in which media members from Mexico covered.

Conference workshop sessions featured industry experts covering a variety of relevant topics, including Jobs in Sports, Finance, Career Transition, Continuing Education, Professional Speaking & Broadcasting, Social Media, Health & Wellness, Networking, Legal, Franchise Opportunities and more. The NBRPA opened with a breakfast and members meeting, presented by Celltex, that included organizational updates, introductions to key leaders from the NBA and NBPA and the opportunity to hear from NBRPA Board Candidates and vote on-site.

"I hope that everyone enjoyed the resort, as well as the fellowship and kindness that was on display throughout the weekend from our members, guests, corporate partners and especially the resort staff," NBRPA Chairman of the Board Otis Birdsong. "I would also like to congratulate and thank Arnie and the staff for a job well done.  A special thanks to the Board of Directors for your time, your dedication and passion that you give to this organization."
