NBRPA united with NBA for a great All-Star 2013 in Houston

February 19, 2013

NBRPA Members: With unprecedented collaboration between the NBRPA and NBA, All-Star 2013 was a very important weekend for the Legends of Basketball. Former NBA, ABA and Harlem Globetrotters players came out in droves to take over Houston — utilizing the February 14-17 All-Star Weekend as a vehicle to recognize the careers of NBRPA Members, celebrate Black History Month and give back to the community. In addition, the NBRPA jointly announced an extension and expansion of its historic partnership with the NBA alongside Commissioner David Stern and Commissioner-Elect Adam Silver in a media announcement held at NBA Jam Session on February 14 that was covered nationally and internationally.

“The NBRPA and its members are proud and honored to have been an integral part of NBA All-Star 2013 in Houston February 14-17,” said Arnie. D. Fielkow, President & Chief Executive Officer for the NBRPA. “Working in conjunction with the NBA and our local Houston NBRPA Chapter, we put together a fun and philanthropic weekend that highlighted what our Association means to the game and to local communities.”

All-Star festivities for the NBRPA began on February 13, as former University of Houston stars Otis Birdsong, Dwight Davis and Ollie Taylor returned to their alma mater to be honored at Hofheinz Pavilion when the hometown Cougars took on the UTEP Miners. It was a big weekend for Birdsong, who was later elected the new Chairman of the NBRPA Board of Directors. Additional Board Members elected to officer positions include Vice Chairman Thurl Bailey, Treasurer Marvin Roberts and Secretary Steve Hayes.

“Returning home to Houston for All-Star Weekend meant the world to me,” said Birdsong. “I would like to thank our local Houston Chapter and President Major Jones for working hand-in-hand with our NBRPA National Office to create a full and meaningful weekend. I would also like to thank our Board for placing trust in me as the new Chairman. Our new 2013 Board plans to increase our level of philanthropic outreach by the NBRPA and its members as we work to use basketball as a vehicle to improve communities and give back to youth.”

Keeping true to Birdsong’s words, the NBRPA launched a new, 12-city nationwide youth basketball and mentoring program in conjunction with the National Police Athletic League (PAL) and National Urban League (NUL) in Houston on February 15. The program, Full Court Press: Prep for Success, will include a day-long youth basketball and life skills clinic conducted by NBRPA Members in each market, combined with a year-round mentoring program for each youngster that participates in the day-long session. In addition to launching the new program, the NBRPA visited three local Houston high schools on February 15 as part of its speakers program to celebrate Black History Month.

While philanthropy carried the weekend, the crown jewel of All-Star Weekend remained the 14th Annual Legends Brunch prior to the All-Star Game on February 17. The NBRPA once again joined forces with the NBA to stage its marquee event for All-Star Weekend and the annual gathering of NBRPA Members honored Legends Clyde Drexler, Robert Horry, Magic Johnson, Yao Ming, Calvin Murphy, Dikembe Mutombo, Hakeem Olajuwon and Rudy Tomjanovich. The Legends Brunch was broadcast live on NBA-TV and seen in more than 50 million households.

During All-Star 2013, the NBRPA and its Legends Care charitable programs garnered tremendous support from corporate America. Companies giving back to the NBRPA and Legends Care during All-Star Weekend include AARP, Adidas, Auntie Anne’s, B&C Skin Tight, BMO Harris, Ear-Q, Gatorade, Miss Jessie’s, Panini, Police Athletic League, Real Estate Mortgage Network, Retired Professional Athletes Group, UBS Financial Services, Urban League, Wells Fargo and ZERO for Prostate Cancer. The NBRPA would like to thank those partners for making such an impactful weekend possible.

An important part of the weekend was sharing the state of the NBRPA in a multi-faceted membership meeting on February 16. As part of this process, Fielkow walked through the NBRPA’s annual report, shared a 4-minute video highlighting the Association and had representatives from each of the beneficial member programs present to membership.
