NBRPA FAST BREAK: News you can use!
April 12, 2012
Are you ready to hit the French Quarter for a weekend of philanthropy, fraternization, food and fun?
Our annual retreat to share ideas, network and learn from one another – the 2012 Legends World Sports Conference – is scheduled for August 17, 18 and 19 at the historic Royal Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans. Located on Bourbon Street in the heart of the French Quarter, the Royal Sonesta offers quick access to everything New Orleans has to offer and we are putting together a one-of-a-kind, all-inclusive itinerary that combines business with entertainment for NBRPA Members in good standing.
NBRPA Membership dues cover a two-night hotel stay, as well as a host of entertainment, dining and learning opportunities. The agenda won’t just be limited to the Royal Sonesta, as we’ve booked activities to take place on the Mississippi River as part of a steamboat cruise for conference attendees. If you know former teammates or friends from your playing days that aren’t current NBRPA Members, now is the perfect time to sign up and take advantage of everything our conference has to offer – the 2012 Legends World Sports Conference promises to deliver members far more than their $250 annual dues.
Look for registration materials in your inbox soon. In the meantime, please email us any ideas for conference sessions or topics you wish to be addressed as part of the 2012 Legends World Sports Conference at firstname.lastname@example.org.
NBRPA ANNOUNCES NEW FULL-TIME HIRES
Earlier this week, we announced the hiring of Mark Scoggins as Chief Revenue Officer and Charece Williams as Senior Director of External Relations & Programming. Both full-time hires will be based in the NBRPA’s national office in downtown Chicago.
Mark is well-known in professional basketball circles as a long-time executive with the Los Angeles Lakers and Magic Johnson Enterprises. Working his way up from an entry level position at the Los Angeles Forum, Mark – under the guidance of Hall of Fame owner Dr. Jerry Buss – was named Executive Vice President of Corporate Sponsorships for the Lakers in 1989 and was responsible for negotiating with major corporations and overseeing partnerships for the Lakers and Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA. In addition to basketball, Mark was a key executive for over two decades with all of Dr. Buss’ sports properties at the Forum, including the Los Angeles Kings (NHL) and ventures in indoor soccer, roller hockey, team tennis and boxing. Mark’s success with Dr. Buss and the Lakers led to his selection in 2004 as President of Business Development for former NBA star Earvin “Magic” Johnson's hugely successful after-basketball business, Magic Johnson Enterprises. In his role as CRO with the NBRPA, Scoggins will oversee strategic partnerships and revenue-generating programs.
In the new position of Senior Director of External Relations & Programming, Williams will work closely with the NBRPA’s Board of Directors to develop strategic programming and broaden the Association’s overall scope. Charece, President of Inside the Huddle Marketing Strategies, worked as a marketing consultant for Wasserman Media Group from 2007 to 2010 – managing the sponsorship marketing relationships for American Express and Wells Fargo (then Wachovia). Prior to her time with Wasserman, she served as an Account Development Manager for Disney’s Wide World of Sports (now ESPN), spearheading business development for indoor sports events at the complex.

HELP THE NBRPA RAISE FUNDS FOR THE DAVE DEBUSSCHERE SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Legends of Basketball are hitting Broadway and raising funds for the NBRPA’s Dave DeBusschere Scholarship Fund. NBRPA Members, friends and basketball fans everywhere are invited to go inside one of the greatest rivalries in NBA History in New York City with a very special showing of the critically-acclaimed MAGIC/BIRD play at the Longacre Theatre on Thursday, April 19. Proceeds raised through this very special Broadway experience will help send former professional basketball players and their children to college through the DeBusschere Fund and will also raise funds for partner charity, Maccabi USA.
