Roland “Fatty” Taylor(1946-2017)

Roland “Fatty” Taylor was born in 1946 in Washington, D.C., graduated from La Salle University and joined the American Basketball Association in 1969. The 6’0” guard played one year for the Washington Capitals before moving on to the Virginia Squires where he spent the prime of his career, racking up 3,495 points, 1,737 assists and 1,715 rebounds in five seasons. Taylor was known for being an outstanding defensive player who played alongside NBA stars including Adrian Smith, “Jumbo” Jim Eakins and Julius “Doctor J” Erving. Taylor also spent a season in the NBA as a member of the Denver Nuggets before retiring in 1977 with a combined ABA/NBA totals of 5,098 points, 2,563 assists and 2,524 rebounds. Taylor was a member of the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) and also joined the Male Breast Cancer Coalition to help bolster awareness of male breast cancer, a disease he battled since March of 2000.
